Pirelli, a global leader in tyre manufacturing, has achieved a significant milestone in its journey toward sustainability. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated Pirelli’s ambitious goal of achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2040. This validation reinforces Pirelli’s leadership in producing eco-friendly tyres and aligns with global efforts to reduce climate change impacts.
Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Tyres for a Greener Future
Pirelli’s commitment to sustainable tyres and eco-conscious practices is highlighted by its Net Zero target. The company aims to cut absolute GHG emissions across Scope 1, 2, and 3 by at least 90% compared to 2018 levels, a goal in line with the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to within 1.5°C. This positions Pirelli as a driving force in the production of eco-friendly tyres, meeting the growing demand for environmentally responsible automotive products.
Pirelli’s Near-Term Goals: 2030 Targets for Sustainability
In addition to the 2040 Net Zero target, Pirelli’s near-term sustainability goals have also been validated by SBTi. By 2030, the company plans to achieve an 80% reduction in absolute GHG emissions for Scope 1 and 2, and a 30% reduction in Scope 3 emissions—this includes emissions from raw material sourcing, services, and transport. These measures are designed to bolster Pirelli’s leadership in the development of sustainable tyres that meet the growing consumer demand for eco-friendly products.
A Leader in Eco-Friendly Innovation
Marco Tronchetti Provera, Executive Vice Chairman of Pirelli, commented: “The validation of our 2040 Net Zero targets by the Science Based Targets initiative makes us proud as it confirms the scientific soundness of the path we are committed to along the entire value chain. A pathway that is part of a complex global context and a transition process whose resilience must be supported by realistic and sustainable targets.”
Pirelli’s innovative approach to eco-friendly tyres forms a critical aspect of the company’s ongoing sustainability efforts. By combining high performance with environmental responsibility, Pirelli is setting a benchmark for the future of sustainable tyres in the global tyre industry.
The Science Based Targets initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF). The initiative helps guide companies in setting science-based goals to curb global warming and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with climate science.
Driving Sustainability in the Tyre Industry
Pirelli’s commitment to eco-friendly tyres and sustainability is a crucial step forward in reducing the automotive industry’s environmental impact. As the company continues to push the boundaries of sustainable tyres, it remains a leader in the global transition toward a greener, more sustainable future.
