What Tyres Were Used By The Teams At Monaco’s Grand Prix In 2021?

After the last 2 years of uncertainty as to whether the Monaco Grand Prix would go ahead due to Covid, it was announced a mere few months earlier that it would go ahead as normal for the first time since 2019.

Which Tyres were chosen?

Pirelli were the stars of the show as in May of 2021, they announced that their softest tyres in their range will be used to support the F1 drivers in the 2021 grand prix. The C5 tyre was used for the first time along with the medium C4 and hard C3.

Pirelli explained that their choice in tyres was due to the fact that it is easier to warm up tyres in Monaco than elsewhere thanks to the abundance of tight turns in a relatively short lap, especially as it ended up being a one-stop race. In 2019, we saw that Lewis Hamilton switched from soft tyres to mediums on lap 11 of the race under the safety car and ended up winning. Mechanical grip was the key to success with the Pirelli tyres, as well as the qualifying and strategy.

The selection of these tyres were very similar to the ones used in the last Grand Prix in 2019, which means the teams had plenty of data to fall back on, however with the C5 being used for the first time in 2021, the two races where these were fixed to the vehicles were a debut.

Was the Grand Prix different due to COVID?

F1 are now continuously using different protocols because of COVID to ensure the safety of all involved, the campaign was decided on being that every driver was given the same allocation of tyre sets each weekend.

Previously, teams were able to nominate a varied selection for their drivers depending on how aggressive or conservative they wanted to be in their competing approach. However, similarly to 2019, drivers still all had the same sets available to them at the start of the weekend, which consisted of two hards, three mediums and eight softs. This allows a wide choice throughout the race depending on the needs and performance of the driver. In the image below, you can see the tyre compound choices used by each country in 2021’s grand prix.
